We had the most amazing time at Carlingford Escapes! The accommodation was fab with loads of space, spotless, and right in the middle of everything. We picked an activity that suited everyone (from aunties to bridesmaids!) and it was such good fun without being too wild. The night ended with disco lights, cocktails, and some very questionable dance moves!

King Fisher Restaurant

Award winning Food in Carlingford

Kingfisher Award Winning Bistro

Kingfisher Bistro in Darcy McGee Courtyard, Carlingford was established in 1998 by brother and sister team Mark and Claire Woods. The secret to their success is top quality, locally sourced ingredients cooked to perfection. After 15 years in business the restaurant has gathered a terrific following and although small, comfortably seating 42, it packs a mighty punch. Thanks to the variety Mark creates in his kitchen and how well Claire manages the service, Kingfisher Bistro is widely praised for producing what many regard as the most exciting food in the area.

Guests will thrill to their modern menus beginning with a “Pork Spring Roll, Hoi sin, pepper coulis, and basil oil” or any selection of eleven starters ”Confit of Duck leg, noodle rosti, roast chorizo oil and sweet soy”, ”Tomato and Basil tagliatelle with fresh parmesan in a white wine sauce”, and ”Fried crab cakes with pepper coulis, basil mayonnaise and house salad”. The local mussels simmered slowly in the finest of cream and white wine with a hint of garlic are particularly popular and there are a number of main courses dressed up old favorites such as sirloin steak (with potato rösti, garlic & parsley butter and onion sauce) alongside more innovative ideas like “Thai spiced pork with sticky rice, curry oil, sweet soy & Asian salad”. Try the fish specials, cooked so delicately that delicious is the only way to describe them. There are also quite a few vegetarian dishes, usually including the house special.

They have something to suit everyone from families, couples and groups to someone popping in for a quick bite.

John Long’s Bar

Drinks in Carlingford

Johns Longs Bar

JOHN LONGS BAR IS AN OLD COUNTY PUB LOCATED JUST FIVE MINUTES OUTSIDE CARLINGFORD.

John Longs Bar a beer garden at the back with fantastic view of the Carlingford Mountains. The front bar has kept its old style feel with a big open fire but with a pool table and Sky TV for the sports fans. If it’s a quiet drink your after then Longs bar is a great place to just sit back and enjoy.

John longs Bar was first opened in 1757. The proprietor John long was the first man in the family to build and open the bar. Over the years the business was passed down through four generations of family’s. In 1996 the original building was burnt to the ground when the thatched roof caught fire from hot ash blowing from a near bonfire. The remaining shell was knocked down and the current owner who is also named John long rebuilt the building over four years and the pub was reopened in 2001. The roof was thatched again and the original sign that was over the door was restored and placed back over the door.

Now John Longs Bar is a traditional Irish pub from the front with a warm and homely feel with live music through the summer. The rear section of the building (lounge) is currently a disco bar which has a live DJ and drink promotions every second week. The main feature of the bar inside is the massive open fire that occupies a full wall. The stone that was used to hand build the fireplace was the remaining stone that was left after demolishing the old building. It also has two beautiful hand crafted features with a railway sleeper as a mantle.

Taaffes Bar

Food & Drinks in Carlingford

Taaffe’s bar

WELCOME TO CARLINGFORDS OLDEST PUB!
TAAFFES BAR CARLINGFORD IS A TRADITIONAL IRISH BAR THAT SETS YOU BACK IN 16TH CENTURY CARLINGFORD.

Taaffes Bar authentic medieval style complete with swords, knights in shining Armour and banquette hall located in the heart of the Castle is the perfect location to leave the modern day behind. Taaffes Bar is the only location in Carlingford with two separate court yards for those sunny days and a separate Sport viewing area for those sporting fans.

The wonderful, rugged medieval remnants of Taaffe’s Castle bar make for spectacular exterior, not to mention one of the most charismatic beer gardens around. You will also get a right royal welcome inside from the staff. It is hard to miss the place – the towering 16th century grey stone keep of the fortification stands supremely in the centre of Carlingford, just across the border in Co Louth. However when you enter through the adjacent quaint village pub where cozy traditional elements such as the soothing coal fire and old black and white pictures stare -back at the central curving bar.In contrast to its spectacular sidekick outside – the main bar on the corner of Market Street and Newry Street – tales on an enjoyable, but less grandiose, style. It is very much in keeping with the rural, cottage-style bars of the 1950’s in which sitting with a creamy pint of plain’ comes easy.

Taaffes is a relaxing spot with a child friendly atmosphere for a casual Sunday afternoon stop off. However, upstairs things certainly get a bit racier on Saturdays and Sundays when the stag and hen parties descend on the disco. It really seems built to cater for such functions so be ready for plenty of cowgirls in pink hats and brides in L-plates taking the dance floor by storm – not to mention blokes in the corner looking like they are having last minute re-thinks. You are much better off hanging around the two beer gardens, whether it be the courtyard or the “secret garden” within the castle walls. The garden is a great chill-out spot, where live bands are the order of the day throughout the summer and groups can even request a barbecue if they give advance notice. Therefore you can dine, as well as live like a king.

Carlingford was the perfect spot for our stag. The accommodation was in a savage location close to everything, which was ideal after a few pints! We did an adrenaline-filled activity that had the lads buzzing all day, then hit the pubs and dance floors ‘til late. Great atmosphere, cracking tunes, and plenty of laughs. Can’t recommend it enough legendary weekend!

Our company booked a two-day retreat with Carlingford Escapes and it was a brilliant decision. The team-building activity was well-organised, engaging, and got everyone working (and laughing) together. The evening meal at a local restaurant was outstanding – great service and even better food. A perfect mix of productivity and relaxation. Highly recommended for corporate getaways.

Our sports club booked a weekend in Carlingford and it did not disappoint. Golf course was in great shape with stunning views, ideal way to spend the day. Afterwards we were straight into the pub for some of the best pints of Guinness we’ve had in a while. The buzz was brilliant and the accommodation was just a stroll away it couldn’t have been handier. Top spot for a lads trip. We’ll be back next season!

We kicked off the weekend with some exhilarating kayaking and a hilarious round of bubble football, which had us all in stitches! Our accommodation was just a stone’s throw from the action. We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. we hit the bustling bars in the town. The atmosphere was electric! Each bar had its own vibe, but we especially loved the live music at Taaffe's Castle. Highly recommend for anyone planning a stag do!

Lily Finnegans

Drinks in Carlingford

Lily Finnegans

Lily Finnegans is a traditional old style pub situated close to the coastline and just 5 kilometres from the village of Carlingford. Hidden deep in the Cooley peninsula, this little gem hasn’t lost any of its authenticity over the years, from the old flagstone floor to the layers upon layers of paint on the ceiling this pub is the only pub in the Cooley peninsula which can truly say it has been untouched by all the recent building boom and retains all of its genuine untouched old world features. A beautiful open fire lights the whole bar up and for the many who enjoy the beautiful walk or cycle around the coast it is a welcoming sight indeed at the end of their travels.

The pub consists of a bar, the snug, pool room and outdoor smoking area. The snug is another wonderful little room at the back of the pub and can seat up to 20 people and also has its own open fire. There is also a fabulous 90″ High Definiton Big Screen in the Bar for all the major sporting events such as Football, Rugby and GAA. But as we all know, they key to a traditional Irish bar is chat and as soon as any sporting match is over the screen goes up and background music turned on and everyone can then truly enjoy the unique atmosphere in this special little pub.

There is live music every Saturday night and on Sundays on Bank Holiday weekends and includes a wide variety of performers and musicians, from Irish to Country to Rock ‘n’ Roll, each week provides you with a different act.

Carlingford Escapes absolutely delivered! The accommodation was perfect and the team made everything so easy, a hilarious activity that had us in stitches, and pubs that kept the cocktails and craic flowing all night. The bride-to-be hasn’t stopped raving, and neither have we. Already plotting our “recovery weekend” back there!
